Our History & Community Need

The El Paso Center for Diabetes began humbly in November of 1968, when Mrs. Estelle Goldman opened her garage to support families with children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. What started as a small initiative has grown into one of the leading local, independent, nonprofit organizations offering comprehensive diabetes management, prevention, and support programs.

Today, we are proud to hold national accreditation as a trusted diabetes education provider, helping El Paso residents manage their condition and improve their quality of life.

Over 34 million people in the U.S. have diabetes—and 1 in 4 don’t know they have it.
More than 88 million adults (1 in 3) have prediabetes, yet 90% are unaware.
Every 21 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.
Every 5 minutes, two lives are lost due to diabetes.

In El Paso, where 87% of the population is Hispanic, Hispanics are:

  • 50% more likely to die from diabetes compared to non-Hispanic Whites.
